Mountaineers · Extreme Travellers · Adventure Filmmakers | Based in Melbourne · Available Worldwide

Creative Head · Editor

Based in Melbourne, Australia, Amlan is an MBA grad specializing in strategy and finance, but he promises that that's all that's boring about him. He prefers to introduce himself as a mountaineer, an explorer, and an independent adventure filmmaker. For the last decade, he has travelled the lengths and breadths of India, Nepal, and Australia. His projects have also taken him to countries like Azerbaijan, Russia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Bhutan, and many more.

"

We go where people dare not think.

We shoot what people dare not see.

A designer and business analyst by profession, she feels much more at home when adrenaline rushes through her veins. An anthropologist at heart, she is a big believer in documenting things with an aim to preserve them. She even documents her mother's recipes. Haha. She is addicted to that feeling of nostalgic high which she gets when she sees a photo from the past. Photojournalism and adventure documentaries are natural extensions of this trait of hers.

Stuff we do

Our mission has always been to discover true freedom, in as many forms as it comes in, and we strongly believe it lies in the great outdoors. Traditionally, we have found our solace in mountaineering and backpacking. But of late, we have been working hard behind the scenes to integrate another dimension into our adventures - bikepacking.

Mountaineering

Mountaineering is an extreme form of backpacking, really! That's the only way we can justify why we do it. Haha.

Backpacking

Our first love, and our general modus operandi - every project of ours has involved backpacking in some form.

Hard yards behind the scenes have brought our bikepacking dream closer to reality. Click here to know more.

Stuff We Film

Wherever we go and whatever we do, we always have our cameras in our hands. Our filmmaking philosophy is rooted in capturing authentic adventures, cultural narratives, and striking landscapes. We strive to bring the everyday world to life with a distinctive retro aesthetic that evokes nostalgia and timelessness.

We are not weirdos, but one of our favourite things to do on a trip is to go to the main market and just observe people. Documenting them & goings-on of the day is just a natural extension of this curiosity.

Being mountaineers & adventurers, we go to places where most don't. This gives us a unique advantage of being able to film people and stories that are as far from mundane as possible.

What's up with the name ABOL anyway?

Acute Bear & Obtuse Llama? Quite a name, huh! The story of how we arrived at this name is not as complicated, though. We thought of the name over a casual cup of coffee in our small apartment. Here is how the discussion went that day.

Acute Bear

Amlan felt Sana resembled a Bear in the wild - strong-willed, fiercely protective of those she loves, and feels a deep connection to nature. And "Acute" because she is sharp, perceptive, intense, and highly sensitive. And also, she looks like a bear, doesn't she?

Obtuse Llama

Sana felt Amlan resembled a Llama - quiet but determined, light-hearted, adaptable, and dependable, and likes to be funny. And "Obtuse" because he is the obvious joker in the group. Secret - He doesn't like being called Amy!

Where have we adventure-d?

We are lucky that we hate settling down at one place, because our projects often involve relentless travels worldwide. And till now,we have loved every bit of it. Well, there have been a few bad apples here and there, but hey, at least it's better than not travelling at all. Feel free to check out our work.

Your Questions

Answered

What's the general vibe of your projects?

Think mountains, remote locations, earthy vibes, nostalgic retro but with a modern tinge. It's that and much more. Check out previous work.

Can you match our existing brand aesthetic?

Absolutely, we pride ourselves on adaptability. But we also have a knack for coming up with radical ideas. Some find it extreme; we call it natural. You choose what you want.

How long does the creative process take?

From ideation to delivery, the process usually takes 2-4 weeks, depending on its complexity. Our largest project has been 6 weeks, but that's very rare.

Do you have the tools necessary to collaborate?

The short answer is yes. We are ready to collaborate with anyone resource-wise. While we are embedded in Sony, Fuji, and Nikon ecosystems, versatility is the game we play.

Do you handle everything yourself?

We handle the end-to-end creation process, starting from ideation, storyboarding, filming, editing, and delivery; unless we are collaborating with other creatives on larger projects.

What services do you specialise in?

Media production, product placements, editorial photography, remote exploration, and anthropological documentation. Send us a mail, we would love to talk.
