PHOTOJOURNALISM
THE KALEIDOSCOPE
A PHOTOJOURNALISM VENTURE BY SANA & AMY
We specialise in documenting people, finer elements of their culture, their interactions with nature and all the colors of their life in monochrome. Both of us being trained anthropologists, we bring in our knowledge of history of cultures and their evolution, into our storytelling with an aim to bridge differences and build narratives that inspire positive change in the world.
Our photographic journey started in the Himalayas in 2018 when we had the chance to take part in an expedition through the heart of the Himalayas, where we had the privilege of capturing the essence of Bhutanses people and their rich cultural tapestry. Over the years, we have honed our storytelling skills, using the lens to convey stories, struggles, and triumphs of the individuals and communities we have encountered.
SPITI VALLEY, INDIA
Winter life in Spiti Valley, India, is a captivating journey into a realm of pristine beauty and challenging conditions. As the season descends upon this high-altitude desert, the landscape is transformed into a wonderland of snow-covered monasteries, frozen rivers, and quaint villages nestled among the mighty Himalayan peaks. With temperatures plummeting well below freezing, the resilient people of Spiti adapt to their environment by hunkering down in their cozy homes, engaging in traditional rituals, and savoring warming yak-butter tea. The silence of the snow is broken only by the occasional jingle of prayer flags and the footsteps of snow leopards, a symbol of the valley’s untamed allure. Winter in Spiti offers a glimpse into a world where survival, spirituality, and the indomitable human spirit come together against a backdrop of stark and breathtaking beauty.
BHUTAN
Life in Bhutan is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, nestled in the breathtaking Himalayas. Known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” Bhutan is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and a unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness. Bhutanese people lead a simple, contented life, deeply rooted in Buddhist beliefs and practices. The serene monasteries, colorful prayer flags, and the striking architecture of dzongs (fortresses) dot the landscape, offering a sense of spiritual tranquility. In Bhutan, happiness takes precedence over material wealth, and policies are designed to prioritize the well-being of the people and the environment. This results in a slower-paced, contemplative way of life where close-knit communities, traditional festivals, and reverence for nature are hallmarks of this extraordinary Himalayan kingdom.
