We handpick our projects based on the following two criteria - extreme adventure and/or extreme cultural vulnerability. And more often than not, we choose those that are under-covered by the mainstream media/content space. Every such project is guided by an ethnographic approach, capturing everyday realities in their most authentic form. Our ultimate objective is to promote meaningful cultural exchange and reduce stereotypes, while encouraging others to discover freedom, and doing so ourselves.

Projects

Growing up in Darjeeling

Darjeeling was my first ever "trip" with my family. I must have been about 8 years old. From being there as a child myself to documenting their lives today, it was a project full of nostalgia.

Kathmandu: The Old and the New

The idea behind this project was to document the new cosmopolitan Kathmandu culture in an old way and the old religious tradition in a new way. The contrast we got actually surprised us!

Tawang: Land of the Monpas

The Torgya festival is celebrated at the Tawang Monastery in January. Celebrated by the Monpa people to symbolize the victory of good over evil, it was a cultural extravaganza like no other.

Bhutan in Monochrome - I

Bhutan in 2018 was ABOL's first project. Then we were just starting out on our creative journey, still learning on the job, still getting to know our equipment, still rough and unpolished.

Bhutan in Monochrome - II

Bhutan is the only place where both Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism are state religions. This project aims to document the interaction of the Bon tradition, Buddhism, and modern cultural changes.

Meghalaya: Children of the Clouds

Meghalaya fosters a very unique society. Inhabited mostly by three tribes - Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia, it's the wettest place in the world,, with Mawsynram receiving nearly 470 inches rainfall annually.

Rail Tales: Melbourne in Transit

"If you want to experience Melbourne, make sure you take the train" - a wise man once said. Boasting aside, after nearly three years in Melbourne, we feel it's life resides in its trains.

Melbourne: A Halloween Story

Melbourne is always a lively city - culture, cafes, pubs, restaurants, art galleries, and concerts all play their part. But the annual festivities are its heart and soul - chief among them, Halloween!

Melbourne: The Streets

Melbourne’s streets are world-renowned for their rich mix of street art, culture, and community life that captures the city's creative soul. This series doesn't even scratch the surface!

A White Winter in Spiti

Is Spiti the coldest place in India? Some would say Dras, but Spiti is not far behind. We documented life in this remote Himalayan utopia during peak winters, when temperatures hovered near -10°C.

Nepal: Echoes of Everest

You must have heard of Everest! Aka Chomolungma and Sagarmatha locally, it is considered sacred by the local Sherpa people and was not climbed until the British came along! What a surprise!

Stories from Baku & Beyond

Azerbaijan is literally the place where the East meets the West. Ancient fire-worshipping religion, Soviet legacies, and modern aspirations converge here in this country called "The Land of Fire".
